About Fung Kuen Suet, Michelle

Belonging to a generation of young western-trained Hong Kong artist, Michelle returned to Hong Kong in 2011 to pursue her art career after living almost two decades in Vancouver, Canada. Owing to her multi-faceted background and international outlook, she draws inspirations from a wide range of sources and popular sub-cultures, including fairy tales, children’s picture books, the Japanese Otaku, fifteenth-century European etching, as well as traditional Chinese painting. Animals and their relationships with humans, explored from various intellectual and philosophical angles whether emotional, sustenance, or environmental, is a long recurring thread in her works.

Her works have been exhibited in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Hong Kong, Korea and China. Her award-winning book “Tin Hong Gaau Jyu” (Joint Publishing, 2017) uses marine plastic pollution as a platform to discuss human relationship with nature. Her work “Plastic, plastic, every where!” received the Grotto Award, Hong Kong Baptist University (2015) and Award of Excellence, Fourth Greater China Illustration Awards (2016) and was recently shortlisted in the Hong Kong Young Writer’s Competition (2016-7) hosted by Joint Publishing and Sun Hung Kai Properties. Her most recent work Polluta, Floating Artist Colony in the Sky (2015) was part of juried international programme “City as Metaphors” hosted by Hong Kong Baptist University, Zurich University of the Arts and Hamburg City University. This work will also be shown in a solo exhibition at Pro Arts Gallery, Oakland, California (2018.) Her exhibition I Don’t Know if You Know How Much I Love You (2012) was the inaugural solo show at Hi Art, a gallery owned by Beijing art tycoon Wu Jing. She has participated in prestigious artist residencies including Banff Centre, Canada, Island Institute, Alaska and Art Omi, NY (recipient of the Cecily Brown Fellowship.) Her works have been featured in the media numerous times such as RTHK, Sing Tao Daily and Hong Kong Economic Times, and are in international private collections and as well as the Canada Council Art Bank.
